This is a veteran-focused program: Priority registration is offered for disabled Veterans, disabled members of the armed services, VA staff, and Disabled Sports USA chapter members. Other adaptive sport organizations and interested individuals will be welcomed as space permits.
In partnership with Disabled Sports USA and with support from the Department of Veterans Affairs, this training is offered at no cost to disabled veterans, disabled members of the armed services, VA staff and adaptive sport providers who serve disabled Veterans at no cost to the Veterans.
Sponsored by The North Face, Paradox Sports has put together a comprehensive training program to welcome people with physical disabilities into the climbing community. Adaptive climbing courses include a mix of classroom education, open discussions and on-the-wall training and facilitation over a two day period with a focus on physical adaptation for climbing with paralysis, amputation, visual/hearing impairment, and neuromuscular disorders.
Day One:
Facilitators Only
Classroom and On-the-wall Training
9:00AM - 4:30PM
Day Two:
Facilitators + Adaptive Climbing join for the
Adaptive Climbing Community Day
9:00AM - 12:00PM
The course will be hosted at an indoor rock climbing gym. Dress code is casual and should be suitable for on-the-wall learning. If you do not have climbing equipment, it may be borrowed from the gym. Paradox Sports provides a handbook with space to take notes.
* If you wish to personally purchase the Adaptive Climbing Manual book, they are available for $20 during check-out (discounted for course participants - regular price $29.95 + shipping via the Paradox website!)
Facilitators: If you are joining the two-day course as a facilitator, all attendees must have (at minimum) basic knowledge of climbing and ability to belay prior to attending the course. This helps maximize the time focused on adaptive climbing skills and equipment to make the course a valuable experience for all. If you have never climbed before, or if you are in need of a refresher, please contact your local climbing gym to take an introductory course prior to signing up for the Adaptive Climbing Initiative Facilitator Course.
Adaptive Climbers: If you are an individual with a disability, there are no pre-requisites to joining the Adaptive Climbing Community Day! We welcome all experience levels and disabilities to join for our free half day climbing event. This is a safe and supportive opportunity for people who have never tried climbing to get on the wall, as well as for experienced adaptive climbers to share insight with the newly trained facilitators about their climbing experiences and about disabilities.
Meals: Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided on day one, and breakfast will be provided on day two. Please specify dietary restrictions and allergies in your registration. Although not guaranteed, we will make every effort to make accommodations. There will be a break from approx 12:30pm - 1:30pm on Day One of the course and Day Two will wrap up around 12:30pm. Please bring any snacks that you might want during the day.
Travel: Attendees are responsible for their own travel.
Cancellation Policy: As a courtesy to others who may be on a Waiting List, please notify Paradox Sports as soon as possible if you can no longer attend the training.
